Squirrel Attacks in the New Forest
that was to be the holding cell for the pest was found discarded some distance away from the trap. Rumours abound that a note was attached to the bowl by a soggy biscuit chastising the two leaders for their "feeble" attempt at catching a squirrel but no evidence of this was forthcoming. Despite these attacks, the camp went exceedingly well.

On Thursday night a formal dinner was put on by the Explorer Scouts themselves. Guests at the event included their leaders with guests of honour being Mike Brown (District Explorer Scout Treasurer for Gosport), Pat Brown (District Explorer Scout Administrator for Gosport) and Alison Rowe. Ferny Crofts was represented by Jamie (Duty Warden) as

the warden (Paul Vincent) was unable to attend due to a prior engagement. All those present at the Thursday night feast said they had enjoyed themselves that night and declared the camp a great success, despite the fact that some of the planned events could not take place due to the extreme temperature experienced during the days. Additional events were put on in their place which were more suited to the extreme conditions such as soapy slide and, believe it or not, a camp swimming pool.

A great time was had by all! Thanks to all who made the camp worthwhile.

Summer Camp 9th - 16th August 2003

A number of serious attacks took place in the New Forest this Summer. The attacks were centred on Ferny Crofts, a camp site in the Forest run by the Hampshire County Scout Council.

Between 9th and 16th August 2003 on this years Summer Camp a trail of destruction was left on more than one occasion. Consisting of packets of biscuits, cartons of milk and jars of hot chocolate, the trail seamed to lead to hungry Scouts looking for a midnight feast. "They're too trustworthy and honest to do anything like this", Alan Seymour (District Commissioner For Gosport) was heard to say. Further investigations were required to expose the real

culprits. "Scouts are not renowned for their sharp teeth", said one of the wardens, "It has to be one of them there squirrels".

Known for their bravado, cunning and skill, the New Forest "Ninja" Squirrel was soon in the frame as the perpetrator of these heinous crimes against food. Known to carry can openers and scissors in the form of front teeth, they will stop at nothing in order to avoid having to forage for food. Camp stores and unsuspecting campers' tents are prime hunting grounds for these, the scourge of squirrel kind.

Despite great precautions taken by the camp organisers, the squirrels were able to feast on their contraband on a number of occasions "I thought putting everything in

plastic boxes would be good enough" said Sandra Pettit (District Explorer Scout Commissioner For Gosport).

In an attempt to gain the upper hand and more evidence to substantiate the case against the squirrels, Simon Jessop (an Explorer Scout Leader in Gosport) and Carl Pettit (an Assistant Explorer Scout Leader in Gosport) set a humane squirrel trap in the woods at the rear of the aptly named event tent where the attacks took place.

The lure of peanut butter on freshly broken bread was too much for the local "Ninja" population and true to form the bate was taken and the trap was sprung. Not to be out done by mere ingenious leaders of the Scouting community, the washing up bowl
